DESCRIPTION

This is the collections page of The Yorkshire Archaeological & Historical Society, until recently known as the Yorkshire Archaeological Society.

Since 1870 we have published the Yorkshire Archaeological Journal and other works dealing with the history and archaeology of the ancient county of Yorkshire, and we continue to do so. https://www.yas.org.uk/

Copies of our academically-respected journal and other publications have for many years enjoyed a place in scholarly libraries of many countries. Sadly, some are long out-of-print so to ensure that this body of knowledge remains easily accessible throughout the world to researchers and general readers alike, free and in perpetuity, the Society has resolved to republish as much as possible in digital form, as part of the Internet Archive.

Three categories of publication can be found here:

  • Yorkshire Archaeological Journal volumes 1 to 82, covering the period from 1870 to 2010
  • Yorkshire Archaeological Society Record Series - a selection of out-of-print volumes from a series which includes transcriptions and the fruits of archaeological and historical research
  • Court Rolls of the Manor of Wakefield Series - several volumes of transcriptions published since 1977

Every effort has been made to ensure that the contents displayed here - including illustrations and fold-out drawings - are reproduced in full, which may not be the case with other copies of the same publications to be found elsewhere.

Readers should also be advised that whilst many if not most of these works were written by authors of scholarly standing, and some continue to be cited to this day, research standards, ideas and forms of expression are subject to change. Evidence and argument in early publications may since have been superseded by more recent research.

Starting in 2011 the Journal has been produced for the Society by an academic publisher: for details http://www.tandfonline.com

To mark the 150th anniversary of the Society’s foundation the Cambridge University Press offer reprints of many of the volumes in the Record Series: for details http://www.cambridge.org/gb/academic#JH2sCjChZOQ5TveY.97
